History of Cycling Mug

“The bicycle, the bicycle surely, should always be the vehicle of novelists and poets.”

—Christopher Morley

The illustrations on this fine bone china mug show the evolution of bikes throughout history, from the running machine in 1818 to the sleek bikes of today. This might be thought of as the family tree of cycling, charting generations of bicycles from early models with forgotten names like the Draisine, the Velocipede—also called the Bone-shaker—the Penny Farthing, the Moulton, and the Rover to current bikes such as the BMX, mountain bike, Lotus 1000, and electric bike. The distinguishing characteristic of each bicycle is noted.

These mugs are the latest design from in our much-admired line of mugs made in Scotland, in a factory on Loch Lomond, by a family business run by a grandmother, her daughter, and her granddaughter. The company tells us, “Each mug is printed and decorated in the UK by our cheery, hardworking, skilled, and experienced staff.”

The company has produced bespoke bone china mugs for Orla Kiely, Paul Smith, Lulu Guinness, Vivienne Westwood, the Tate, the National Galleries, the National Trust, and many schools, churches, galleries, and other organizations.

Handwashing recommended. Suitable for use in a microwave.

Dimensions: H 3.54" x D 3.34". Capacity: 1.5 cups/12 oz. (350ml)
